How to Build a PC When the Case Arrives Without Its Accessories
When your new case contains the chassis but not the expected screws or brackets, I’ll help you sort essential hardware from convenient extras, choose safe substitutes, and decide when a replacement part is the only sensible route.
A case that arrives without its accessory box can make a straightforward PC build feel uncertain. You may have the chassis, panels, and fans, but no motherboard standoffs, drive screws, power-supply screws, brackets, or manual to explain what belongs where. The important question isn’t whether you can find something that fits a hole; it’s whether the part will hold the hardware securely without damaging the case or components.
The safest approach is to pause, inventory what’s missing, and separate universal-looking hardware from parts that are specific to the case. Some screws can be replaced with standard hardware. Standoffs, front-panel brackets, radiator mounts, and unusual retention pieces often can't.
Start with an inventory, not the motherboard
Put the case on a clear work surface and inspect every compartment, pouch, box, and removable drive tray. Accessory bags are sometimes tucked inside the drive cage, behind the motherboard tray, beneath a PSU shroud, or inside a cardboard insert. Check the underside of the case and any panels you removed during unpacking. A small packet can be easy to overlook, especially when it is taped to protective foam.
Look through the case for parts that may already be installed. Some manufacturers preinstall motherboard standoffs, cable-routing brackets, fan hubs, or drive sleds. Others attach spare screws to the chassis itself. Check the rear expansion-slot covers, fan positions, front-panel connectors, and removable brackets before assuming a component is absent.
Next, make a short list of what you have and what you need. Separate parts by job rather than by appearance:
- Motherboard standoffs and the tool or socket used to tighten them
- Motherboard screws
- Power-supply mounting screws
- 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch drive screws or trays
- Fan and radiator mounting screws
- Expansion-slot screws or covers
- Front-panel, USB, audio, and fan-controller documentation
- Brackets for vertical graphics cards, pumps, reservoirs, or unusual drive layouts
Not all of these items necessarily come with the case. Motherboard screws, for example, are normally supplied with the case, while M.2 drive screws usually come with the motherboard. Power supplies commonly include their own mounting screws. Treat the list as a way to identify your needs, not as proof that every item should have been in the case box.
Confirm the Case’s Intended Hardware
Before ordering replacements or substituting screws, download the case’s installation manual from the manufacturer’s support page and compare its parts diagram with your inventory. Confirm the exact case revision when the manufacturer lists more than one, because mounting hardware and included brackets can differ between versions.
Standoffs are structural parts, not ordinary screws
Motherboard standoffs create a raised mounting surface between the motherboard and the metal tray. They prevent the solder points on the underside of the board from contacting the chassis and let the correct mounting screws hold the board firmly. Without the proper standoffs, the motherboard can flex, short against the case, or sit at the wrong height for the rear I/O opening and expansion slots.
Don't install the motherboard directly against the tray, and don’t use random nuts, washers, or improvised spacers in place of standoffs. A substitute must have the correct thread, height, outside shape, and electrical clearance. It also needs to stay fixed while you tighten the motherboard screws. A loose or oversized spacer can shift under the board or touch circuitry where it shouldn’t.
Many modern cases use standard motherboard standoff dimensions, but that doesn’t make every standoff interchangeable. Thread types can vary between the case side and the screw side, and some cases use captive or tool-less mounts. The motherboard’s mounting holes also vary by form factor. Install only the standoffs that line up with holes in your board; an extra standoff under an empty area can contact the underside and cause a short.
If the case has no standoffs installed and none are included, look for a replacement kit identified for that case or contact the manufacturer. A generic kit may work only after you confirm the dimensions and threads. If the case uses a proprietary mounting system, wait for the correct part rather than forcing standard standoffs into it.
Decide which screws can be substituted
Case screws are less universal than they look, but several common replacements are available. Standard PC case screw kits often include coarse-thread screws for mounting drives or fans and fine-thread screws for motherboard or power-supply mounting. The correct choice depends on the threaded hole and the thickness of the mounting material.
A screw that threads in smoothly for several turns and clamps the part without bottoming out is generally a better candidate than one that merely appears to fit. Never force a screw into a hole. If it becomes tight immediately, stops before the component is secure, or protrudes far enough to contact another part, remove it and identify the mismatch.
Length matters as much as thread. An overly long screw can damage a drive, fan, radiator, or panel beneath the mounting point. This is especially important with fans and radiators: a screw that is safe for a fan alone may be too long when it passes through a radiator or a thin case bracket. Use the hardware specified in the case or cooling product’s instructions whenever possible.
Avoid substituting ordinary hardware-store screws without checking their head shape and thread. A head that is too large can interfere with a drive tray or panel, while a sharp or poorly finished tip can scratch a component. Don't use adhesive, zip ties, or double-sided tape as a structural replacement for motherboard or power-supply mounting hardware.
Motherboard and power-supply screws deserve particular care. The motherboard must be held evenly at each mounting point, and the power supply must remain securely supported at the rear of the case. If you’re missing only one suitable screw, don’t assume an unrelated screw is acceptable simply because it reaches the threads. Obtain the right hardware before completing the build.
Identify parts that are specific to the case
Some missing accessories aren't just fasteners. A removable 2.5-inch drive bracket, vertical GPU support, front-radiator bracket, pump mount, or custom cable cover may have a shape that only the original part can provide. The case may physically hold a component without it, but that doesn’t mean the installation is safe or compatible.
Check whether the case supports the configuration you want without the missing bracket. A 2.5-inch SSD might mount on the motherboard tray instead of in a missing cage. A graphics card can usually be installed horizontally using the case’s standard expansion slots, even if a vertical-mount bracket is absent. A liquid-cooling pump or reservoir, however, shouldn't be left hanging from tubing or attached with an improvised load-bearing method.
The rear I/O shield is another point to verify. Some motherboards include a separate shield that snaps into the case, while others have a shield permanently attached to the motherboard. A missing removable shield is usually a motherboard accessory issue, not a case issue. Don’t bend or remove an integrated shield to make it behave like a separate one.
Fan and radiator mounting hardware also varies. A case may include fan screws but not the longer screws needed for a radiator installation, or it may rely on a bracket with captive hardware. Check the thickness of the fan, radiator, bracket, and washer stack before choosing a replacement. The screw must clamp the assembly without reaching into the radiator fins or tubes.
Build only the parts that are ready
You can often continue with low-risk preparation while waiting for replacement hardware. Install the processor, memory, and cooler on the motherboard outside the case if the cooler’s instructions support that sequence. Prepare the power supply cables, inspect the case’s cable openings, and plan where storage and fans will go. Keep protective films and loose screws away from exposed circuitry.
Avoid using the motherboard as a test fit while standoffs are missing. It’s tempting to place the board in the tray to check alignment, but that can scratch the underside or encourage you to continue with an unsafe mounting arrangement. You can instead compare the board’s hole pattern with the case manual and confirm that each required standoff location is present.
If the case has installed standoffs but you’re unsure whether their pattern is correct, place the motherboard gently over them without sliding it around. Every installed standoff should correspond to a mounting hole, and there should be no standoff beneath a part of the board that has no hole. Remove extras with the appropriate tool rather than leaving them in place as “spares.”
Don’t power on a partially secured system just to see whether it works. A loose board, unsupported graphics card, or unmounted power supply can put strain on connectors and circuit boards. Functional testing is more useful after the main components are properly mounted and the case can support them safely.
Choose between a replacement and a return
Contact the seller first if the case was advertised as including the missing hardware or if the package appears to have been opened or damaged. Photograph the box, internal packaging, case, and contents, then describe the specific parts that are absent. Keep the order information and model number available. This is usually more effective than ordering a random hardware kit and discovering later that the case uses a different system.
The case manufacturer may offer replacement accessory packs, individual brackets, or a downloadable parts list. Ask for the exact case model and revision, not just a similar-looking product name. If the missing part is structural and the manufacturer can't supply it, returning or exchanging the case may be more sensible than adapting it.
A replacement is especially appropriate when the missing item affects motherboard support, power-supply mounting, radiator clearance, graphics-card retention, or the intended load path for a heavy component. The money saved by improvising a small part isn't worth creating a problem that is difficult to diagnose later.
A reliable build starts with the right small parts
Before mounting anything, confirm that the case has the correct standoffs installed, that every needed component has a suitable mounting method, and that no screw is being forced or used beyond its intended length. Standard replacement screws can solve some omissions, but brackets and structural hardware usually require case-specific parts.
Once the missing accessories are identified, continue with the components you can prepare safely and wait for the rest. A short delay is preferable to a motherboard short, damaged radiator, loose power supply, or unsupported graphics card. The goal isn’t merely to get the PC assembled; it’s to make sure the case continues to hold and protect the system long after the first successful boot.
