A Build-Day Method for Keeping Screws, Cables, and Manuals Organized
I’ll clarify how to keep screws, cables, and manuals under control during a long PC build, using a low-tech labeling and staging system that helps beginner builders avoid mismatched hardware and missing instructions.
A multi-hour PC build rarely becomes difficult because one screw is impossible to install. More often, small items lose their identity along the way: a standoff gets mixed with a motherboard screw, a front-panel cable disappears under packaging, or the manual you need is buried beneath a stack of boxes.
A simple organization system prevents those problems without requiring specialist tools. You need a few containers, labels, a pen, and a deliberate place for documentation. The goal isn’t to make your workbench look perfect. It’s to preserve the connection between each loose part and the component or step where you’ll use it.
Set up a small build-day station
Before opening component boxes, choose one area for active assembly and one nearby area for packaging and unused parts. The active area should be large enough for the case, motherboard, and a few small containers. Keep drinks, loose tools, and unrelated objects somewhere else. A screw that lands in a crowded workspace is much harder to identify than one that lands in an empty tray.
You don’t need a dedicated workshop. A clean table and a shallow box lid can work well. The lid gives you a defined boundary for small parts, while the table provides room for larger components. If you’re building on carpet, place a stable board or table under the work area rather than trying to organize loose hardware on the floor.
Gather a few ordinary supplies:
- Small resealable bags, envelopes, or plastic cups
- Masking tape or removable labels
- A fine-point marker or pen
- A shallow tray, bowl, or box lid for screws in active use
- A larger box for spare hardware and packaging
- A folder or envelope for manuals, diagrams, and receipts
- Your phone or a sheet of paper for a simple parts record
The containers don’t need to be specialized. What matters is that each container has a clear purpose and a label you can read without guessing.
Label hardware by destination, not just by size
A common mistake is to put every screw in one container and sort them later. That usually creates uncertainty at exactly the point when you need to know whether a screw belongs in the motherboard, a storage drive, or a case panel. Sort hardware when you remove it from its packaging or when you take it out of the case.
Use labels based on where the hardware goes. “Motherboard,” “2.5-inch drive,” “power supply,” and “side panel” are more useful than “small black screws” or “long screws.” If a component uses several screw types, make the label more specific, such as “motherboard—standoffs” or “M.2—drive and heatsink.”
For case hardware, the manufacturer may provide a mixed accessory box. Separate the contents into small groups and identify them from the case manual before assembly. Some screws look nearly identical but differ in thread or length. Don’t force a screw that resists turning; set it aside and check the diagram or the nearby mounting hole. Resistance is useful information, not a challenge to apply more torque.
Keep a container labeled “spares” for hardware left over after a step is complete. Don’t throw spare screws into a general junk drawer while you’re working. Case manufacturers often include extra fasteners, and those extras can be valuable if you add a drive, replace a fan, or lose one during a later upgrade. Store the spares with the case rather than with the motherboard or power supply, because the case is usually the source of its mounting hardware.
Use a temporary tray for screws in progress
Permanent storage and active assembly are different jobs. A labeled bag is good for hardware you’ve finished sorting, but it can be awkward when you’re repeatedly picking up the same few screws. Use a shallow tray or box lid for the screws needed during the current step.
For example, when mounting the motherboard, place only the required screws in the tray and leave the labeled motherboard container beside it. When the step is complete, return unused pieces to the labeled container and move the finished screws into a separate “installed” mental category. This reduces the chance that a screw from the next step gets mixed into the current one.
If you need to pause, stop before moving the tray. Take a quick photograph from above or write down what remains in it. A photo is especially helpful if the build will continue the next day or if someone else may move items from the table. The photo doesn’t replace labeling, but it preserves the state of the work when you leave it.
Avoid placing loose screws directly on the motherboard, graphics card, or power supply. They can slide into spaces you can’t easily inspect, scratch a surface, or create an unnecessary risk when the system is powered later. A tray costs almost nothing and gives small metal parts a predictable home.
Give cables an identity before they disappear
Cables are easier to manage when you identify both ends and their destination. Power supplies often include several cables that look similar, while a case can have a collection of front-panel, USB, audio, fan, and lighting leads. If a cable is still attached to its component, label the free end as soon as you unpack it.
Short pieces of masking tape make useful temporary flags. Write labels such as “CPU power,” “GPU power,” “front USB,” “front audio,” or “rear fan.” Wrap the tape around the cable near its connector, leaving a small tab that you can read without covering the contacts. Don’t place adhesive over electrical contacts or inside a connector.
For modular power supplies, keep the cables with the power supply until you’re ready to connect them. Only use modular cables supplied or explicitly approved for that exact power supply model. Connectors can look compatible even when the wiring on the power-supply side isn't. Organization helps here by preventing an old or unrelated cable from drifting into the active build.
You don’t have to install every cable as soon as you see it. Lay out only the cables needed for the current stage and return the rest to a labeled bag or the power-supply box. A simple sequence might be motherboard power, processor power, storage power, graphics power, and then case connections. The exact order can vary, but limiting the number of loose cables makes it easier to see what remains.
When a cable has been connected, route its unused length toward the side of the case where it will eventually be managed. Don’t bundle everything tightly before the system has been tested. Leave enough slack to disconnect a component without cutting or redoing a bundle. Organization should make corrections easier, not turn every change into a small unravelling project.
Keep manuals with the part they explain
Manuals aren't just packaging. They contain the diagrams and connector locations that are most useful when the build is in front of you. Keep paper manuals in one folder or envelope, but mark which component each belongs to. A motherboard manual, case manual, and power-supply manual shouldn't become one anonymous pile.
If you download a digital manual, save it locally before beginning the build and give it a descriptive filename, such as motherboard-model-manual.pdf. Store it in a build folder along with your parts list and any notes. Internet access may be inconvenient at the workbench, and product pages can change over time. A local copy gives you a stable reference for the assembly session.
Use removable tabs or sticky notes to mark pages you expect to revisit: motherboard layout, front-panel headers, storage installation, fan connections, and case diagrams. Write down page numbers rather than relying on memory. If a diagram is unclear, compare it with the actual connector before plugging anything in.
Preserve the boxes, accessory bags, and documentation until the system has passed its initial tests. You may need a missing bracket, an extra mounting screw, a warranty detail, or a model number during troubleshooting. You don’t need to keep every shipping insert forever, but discarding all packaging during the build makes later identification harder.
Track progress with a short build record
A basic record prevents repeated checking. It can be a sheet of paper, a notes app, or a small spreadsheet. Record the component model, any unusual accessory, and the step you’ve completed. For example, note that the motherboard standoffs were checked, the processor cooler hardware was installed, or a particular cable was left disconnected for testing.
This is particularly useful when a build spans several sessions. Write down what is installed, what is still in its labeled container, and what you intentionally haven’t connected. “GPU not installed yet” is more useful than a vague note that says “mostly done.” If a problem appears later, the record can also help you retrace the last completed stage.
Take a few photos at useful points rather than photographing everything. A picture of the case before cables are routed can show where a front-panel lead began. A picture of the motherboard before the graphics card is installed can preserve the location of headers that will later be hidden. Keep these images in the same folder as your digital manuals.
Finish each stage before opening the next box
Opening every package at once feels efficient, but it produces a workbench full of unidentified parts and packaging. A better rhythm is to complete one small stage, return unused hardware to its labeled container, and then open the next relevant box.
A sensible stage might be preparing the case, preparing the motherboard, installing the motherboard, connecting basic power, or adding storage and expansion cards. At the end of each stage, pause for a quick reset: place tools back in one spot, move packaging aside, check for loose screws, and update your build record.
That pause is also the right time to compare the installation with the manual. If a connector or bracket doesn’t match the diagram, resolve the uncertainty before proceeding. Many avoidable mistakes happen when a builder keeps moving simply because the next component is already on the table.
Store the leftovers for the next upgrade
When assembly is complete, separate three things: installed parts, true spare hardware, and unrelated packaging. Put spare case screws, drive brackets, unused cable ties, and adapter pieces into a labeled bag inside the case box. Keep power-supply cables in the power-supply box, and keep motherboard-specific accessories with the motherboard documentation.
Write the computer’s build date and main component models on the outside of the documentation folder or storage box. That small note can save time months later when you’re trying to identify a spare cable or determine which manual applies to the system.
A build-day organization system works because it prevents small uncertainties from accumulating. Label hardware by destination, keep active screws in a separate tray, identify cables before routing them, and preserve manuals where you can reach them. Once the computer is assembled, your future self should be able to find the spare part, the correct diagram, or the answer to “where did this cable come from?” without rebuilding the entire workbench.
